The semester has ended and many things were done and learned. I have been really starting to hone my bass skills and really perfect my style and technique. I've been trying to focus on learning more technical bass lines such as Dean town by Vuflpeck. This was my smart goal and I actually achieved this goal pretty early around December. I think I strained a couple fingers as I remember just spending 6 hours one night trying to figure it out. I've learned that once I put my mind to something I going to get it done that night or at least most of it. My biggest highlight of the semester was making our cover CD with guitar player Colten McMahon. It was great because we just stayed out of my house making so many designs and wasted a lot of paper printing multiple iterations. Once again my band and I are challenged with staying on task and staying focused on one thing at a time. We still need to figure out a solution to these issues but I think a solution could be to keep reminding each other just to focus on one thing and don't even consider other stuff until that task is done. One goal I want to accomplish is to release like a bass grove album. This will contain bass groves that other people can use like royalty free I guess. This will help me focus on one thing a release my own music and start my solo career. My bass playing I hope to continue advancing throughout this final semester.

Academy Goal As an aspiring musician on the bass guitar in an up and coming band, Away Future I must strive to create better music and become a better musician. This process is hard to measure and monitor. I have devised a goal of learning a song that is currently out of my skill set and practicing and acquiring the knowledge and technique to attain the ability to play the song. The song I have chosen is Dean town by Vulfpeck. The feeling I get when the main bass lick comes in is a feeling I can't resist, and the main reason for wanting to learn the song. Dean town has a very fast, funky and groovy bass line. I want people to be thinking in their heads, "wow" when they hear me playing the bass lick. I have put a reasonable timeline on this goal to be completed by January 31, 2019, also at the end of my first semester at school. One of the main reasons I have chosen this goal is to be able to play it in a concert this year with my band as a feature for myself. This goal I have set in place will require dedication and focus which is why I have set away 3 hours in total practice hours a week. 30-minute practice sessions at my house daily with a rest on Sunday. I will start off by playing the song at a reasonable speed at 50% and slowly work myself up in speed month by month until I reach January being able to play alongside the song at full speed. Learning this one song will help me improve with playing other songs with the sheer difficulty level it brings and how much effort I will need to put forward. This goal will help me be a better bass player and a better band member. Personal Goal
Before basketball season starts I must get back into shape so that I can compete with the rest of the kids. Keeping your body fit is a sure way for a more healthy lifestyle and better feeling self overall. For me to get back into shape I am going to have to start working out again, "yay". My goal is to workout every school day before school starts at 7:00 am. This goals timeline is around November 10-17 depending on when basketball tryouts are. I will hopefully continue this goal even after basketball as it is a good way to help keep my body healthy and active. The workout time I wish to do on the schedule is 30-minutes with different workouts on different days. Ex Monday is legs, Tuesday is arm, Wednesday is cardio, and Thursday and Friday will be abs (not final). I will be working out in my basement with a checklist telling me what things I should be doing that day. If I really wanna spice things up I can even throw in a workout cd and use that. This goal is to ensure that I am in tip-top shape for basketball tryouts/season and will give me an edge on the competitors. In class we were tasked with making an album cover. Before we could actually work we had to get some inspiration and learn how to use photoshop. Daniel Caesar inspired me to be ok with putting weird things in my album cover. We then watched videos on what the various tools in photoshop. I learned a lot from those videos such as how to colour, remove objects from a image and how to blur the image. With all this information gathered i was inspired me to create a sort of crazy looking album art. I targeted this album to teenagers. My album art shows all of my band mates inside of a black hole doing different things. I will continue to make better albums with the knowledge i now have
This semester was full of surprises, lots of theory and music videos. It has tested my skills as an artist. Through these challenges, I have learned at least triple the amount of theory knowledge than previously and learned what it takes to make a good youtube video. One very special moment I had this semester was when my band played for the silent auction fundraiser. It took us some time to set up the stage and the lights but the end result was worth it. When we took the stage I was super nervous until we started playing then I got in the mood. From this experience, I have learned that it takes time to make music and you have to organize or you will not be successful. Organizing and using time was a big challenge for me and my band. We did not use the class time we were given to the fullness we could. It was hard to keep focused with all the instruments that were calling me to play them. I decided it was time to stop wasting time and to focus and get all my overdue assignments in and done to a good standard. Due to this struggle, my goal for the next semester is to focus and use the time I am given so I can keep up with assignments and not fall behind like this semester.
On the 14th of December W.H Croxford held a celebration of learning.Due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to attend. Our bands goal was to play 6 songs but however there was some issues with time management for some members including myself. I struggled to learn my parts in the amount of time I was given because of my lack of commitment and a underestimation of the task at hand. The choice to not perform was easily made for us due to members not wanting to perform with a unfinished product. When a band goes on stage unprepared, it looks bad on the performers and the program. It is important to attend the performances prepared or not prepared to learn the hard lessons to learn what you need to and not just ignore it until last minute. For our solo concert we will be performing at lunch in the band room during at a later date in January. Our promotion plan is to post signs in the school advertising the event and telling our families about it. To ensure I am present and ready for the next performance I will get my parts ready on time and communicate with my band members better.
In class a week ago we were challenged about time management and procrastination. What I took away from the lesson is that I am a very chronic Procrastinator but there is hope for me and other procrastinators. We watched a Ted talk about what procrastination is and how to counteract and trick our brain. The key point I took away from the video was Planning for distractions as this is my biggest obstacle. I'm am using this information to plan and complete my youtube video script. This assignment is on the top of my priority list.
To complete this assignment I need to make a smart goal and put it on my calendar. My smart goal is to complete and hand in the youtube video script in on time with no editing errors. How I am going to achieve Is to put it on my google calendar with milestones on certain dates. I need this done by November 17th by the end of the day. I'm am going to complete this at school and at my home if it is not finished there. I know it is measurable as I can tell when I have handed it in. If I manage my time Correctly and use the tools I have been given I will achieve my smart goal and not fail school. In our latest school project our band had to create a 10 minute music video. Achieving the 10 minute mark was the biggest challenge. It was very fun practicing and just making the video. The video making process was getting a camera and just capturing us practicing.
My name is Davin Olichny I am the current bass player for our school band. Our current school project is to make a S.M.A.R.T Goal for personal and Academy. A few weeks back we went across the street to the RVS building. We learned about making Smart Goals and how we cant achieve anything unless its S.M.A.R.T. My current academy goal is to learn the technique of slapping the bass. Using youtube and teachers I can learn the technique. As I progress through the year some songs I will play will require me to slap and if i cant it wont sound as authentic as I would like. So i will begin watching youtube videos and asking the teacher (Mr.Purnell) for help on technique. I will practice on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 2:30. I hope to achieve this goal by 2 months.
Personal Goal: My current personal goal is to get my English language art mark up to a 80% by the end of this semester in time for report card (Two weeks). I want to get this up because I know I can get it higher if I pay more attention in class and use the time given to me more effectively. I will start to work to make my assignments better with more thought and depth. I will start to read daily at home for 30 minutes right when I get home. Getting this mark up will make me have a easier time in English and for future grades so I can make higher levels in school. |
